So your ecommerce website is up and running and now you should do something to draw visitors to your website and tell them about your business. Since search engine may require a few months to index your web content and make it searchable for potential customers, it would be rather wise to help search engines to find your website as soon as possible and do something to attract your customers today. I am not going to tell you about paid off-line and online advertising, I just want to point out a few free and basic ways to advertise your ecommerce site and carry out search engine optimization (SEO). These ways are well known for those who specialize in SEO but I would like to list them here in case if you happen to not know what SEO is and want to broaden your knowledge about some basic methods of your online business promotion. So here are a few rules most of SEO and online marketing experts would recommend to follow:

- Online press release publishing. Write good press releases and have them published on well known online press release websites. There is a lot of information online about how to write a decent looking press release. You can also easily find examples of good press releases if you search for them in major search engines. Publishing of press releases online will improve your business exposure, bring visitors to your website and help search engines to find and index your site quicker since you are allowed to place one or a few links leading to your website in your press release. You can use these sites to submit your press releases: http://www.prweb.com and http://www.prfree.com (feel free to search for others). You can also opt for paid press release submissions which will guarantee faster acceptance of your press releases as well as some additional services.
- Free classifieds. Classifieds are online advertising boards which can be rather helpful for your business promotion. You may find as many classifieds websites as you can and wish to post ads about your products and services (in this particular case the more the better). One of the most popular classifieds websites is, no doubt, http://www.Craigslist.org. This site has a very high page popularity and that is why its content is indexed very quickly by Google and your advertisement gets a chance to be found by Google searchers within a few days, if not hours, although the entry expires in around 10 (you can repost it after expiring).
- Directory submission. Submit your website URL to as many directories as possible. This will give you chance to build inbound links to your website. However submitting to directories can be very frustrating as sometimes it can take more then 6 months (in case of free listing, of course) for your website to get listed in popular directories and many directories do not bother to notify you if your submission has been declined for any reason. One of the most popular directories is www.dmoz.org which listing is a dream for everyone who understands even a bit of search engine optimization. However this website has extremely strict rules and long submission approval period (at least for websites related to tough competition niches). - Submitting URL to search engines. You can make finding your website easier for search engines by submitting your website data to them. You can search at any search engine the following phrase “[Name of a search engine] submit URL” to find a page designed for websites submission to the search engine of your choice. Before submitting your website to a search engine, make sure you have the site’s title (7-12 words), description (at least 15 words) and the most relevant keywords (10-50) at your fingertips. Actually, if you are using social networks and have links to your website there or in other places, search engines may find your site sooner or later without any URL submitting. However, it is recommended to consider submitting URLs of your new websites anyway to be on the safe side and to speed up the process of finding and indexing your website content by search engines.
- Article marketing. Writing articles related to your industry, products / services and submitting them to popular article directories is also a well known practice to spread the word about your business and improve the rank of your website in search engines. A well written article can do miracles for your advertising campaign and constantly send visitors to your website. Online article marketing is a good way to establish yourself as an expert in your business and augment credibility in the eyes of your customers. One of the most popular article directories is http://ezinearticles.com. You can search for others in the web.
- Link exchange. This method is the one you should not overuse since Google, for example, loves rather one-way inbound links than exchanged links. However, if not overused, link exchange can be conducive to both search engine ranking and client acquisition. It is recommended to exchange links with websites having good content and somehow related to your business. For example, if you are selling beer, why not to exchange links with the guys who sell chips; just write them a message to ask if they wanted to. I hope you understand the main idea.
- Freebees and giveaways. Giving something for free has always been one of the most effective ways to attract clients. Thus you can use this little trick to arise interest in your business. You can offer a free sample in case of a paid order, free shipment for a purchase over a certain amount, free trial period etc. depending on your business peculiarities.
